FG Unveils Tough New Measures to Curb Exam Malpractice in 2026 and Beyon

The Federal Government has introduced a robust framework of reforms aimed at tackling examination malpractice and restoring integrity to national examinations across the country.

The measures, which target key national examinations conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO), were announced in Abuja through a statement by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education.

According to the statement, the reforms form part of ongoing efforts to strengthen transparency, credibility, and public confidence in Nigeria’s assessment and certification system. Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said the government is intensifying oversight and deploying targeted strategies to safeguard the sanctity of national examinations.

One of the major reforms is the introduction of enhanced question randomisation and serialisation. Although candidates will receive the same set of questions, the sequencing will differ, ensuring each student writes a uniquely structured paper. This, the Minister explained, will significantly reduce opportunities for collusion and organised cheating.

Alausa also reaffirmed the enforcement of the existing ban on the transfer of students in Senior Secondary School Three (SS3), a move he said is designed to curb last-minute school transfers frequently linked to examination fraud.

In addition, the Ministry has rolled out new national guidelines for continuous assessment, mandating strict adherence to submission timelines. Under the new arrangement, first term assessments will be submitted in January, second term in April, and third term in August. These timelines, the Minister noted, are compulsory and are intended to promote consistency, accuracy, and efficient processing of assessment records nationwide.

Another major reform is the introduction of a unique Examination Learners’ Identity Number for all candidates. This identifier will enable effective tracking of candidates, enhance monitoring and accountability, and support broader reforms in certification and data management.

Alausa assured that examination administration going forward will be conducted under strengthened supervision in collaboration with all relevant examination bodies. He stressed that the new measures reflect the Federal Government’s firm commitment to ensuring credible, fair, and globally benchmarked examinations while addressing Nigeria’s peculiar educational challenges.

He further pledged continued collaboration with state governments, school administrators, parents, and stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation of the reforms and the successful conduct of the 2026 examinations nationwide.
