The Federal Government has concluded plans to establish a dedicated radio station for adult and non-formal education as part of efforts to expand access to learning across Nigeria, especially in underserved and remote communities.
The Director of Literacy and Development at the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education, John Edeh, disclosed this during an interview with journalists in Abuja.
Edeh, who is currently overseeing the commission, said the initiative received approval from the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, to strengthen educational outreach for marginalised and hard-to-reach populations.
According to him, radio remains one of the most affordable and accessible platforms for delivering educational content to learners across the country.
He explained that the proposed station would broadcast literacy, vocational and non-formal education programmes nationwide, while also extending coverage beyond Nigeria’s borders through digital technology.
“Implementation has already commenced in collaboration with the National Commission for Nomadic Education following approval by the Honourable Minister to establish the radio station,” Edeh said.
“With radio broadcasting, we can reach every nook and cranny of the country with lessons and educational content. The station will also have the capacity to cover neighbouring countries.”
He further stated that the platform would be jointly utilised by agencies involved in adult education, nomadic education, and programmes targeting out-of-school children.
According to him, the station would serve as a unified non-formal education radio channel, ensuring wider access to learning opportunities regardless of geographical barriers.
“That radio will become a non-formal education station accessible to all relevant agencies. The frequency will be made available to learners once broadcasting begins so they can tune in from anywhere,” he added.
Edeh noted that the initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s broader digital education strategy aimed at ensuring that no learner is excluded because of location, social status, or circumstance.
The development is expected to boost adult literacy programmes and improve access to educational resources for vulnerable and underserved communities across the country.
