FG Sets Up Special Visitation Panel to Resolve Crisis at FCE (Technical), Akoka

The Federal Government has inaugurated an 11-member Special Visitation Panel to investigate and resolve the lingering institutional crisis at the Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, Lagos State.

Headed by former Governor of Bauchi State and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mohammed Abubakar, the panel has been mandated to conclude its assignment and present a comprehensive report within four weeks.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, clarified that the panel’s work is not a witch-hunt but a strategic intervention aimed at restoring governance standards, institutional integrity, and a stable learning environment.

“This is not a fault-finding mission,” Dr. Alausa said. “It is a deliberate effort to ensure that our tertiary institutions remain centres of excellence, not theatres of unrest. The College has suffered disruptions that threaten its academic and administrative stability. That must be addressed with urgency and fairness.”

He urged the panel members to carry out their assignment with professionalism, impartiality, and a strong sense of responsibility, stressing that the nation’s expectations were high.

“The Federal Government, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda, is determined to reposition federal tertiary institutions for excellence. Your work will be instrumental in reaffirming the credibility of our education system,” the minister added.

The panel’s terms of reference include:

Reviewing the actions of staff unions during the crisis period;
Investigating the conduct of former and acting Provosts, including administrative lapses and delays in decision-making;
Identifying individuals or groups responsible for disrupting official activities, including the reported locking of the Provost’s office;
Assessing the impartiality of the college’s internal disciplinary systems and the roles of key officials such as the Registrar and internal council members;
Evaluating adherence to due process in handling grievances and disciplinary issues;
Recommending disciplinary actions where necessary and proposing long-term legal and administrative reforms to forestall similar crises in the future.

Other panel members include Dr. Adamu Kwami; Prof. Faruk Haruna (Vice Chancellor, Federal University of Education, Kontagora); Dr. Smart Oluebeko (National President, COEASU); Danladi Ali (President, SSUCOEN); Prince Peters Adeyemi; Omotayo Adeyemi; Dr. Ismaila Adiatu; Godwin Egbunefu; Samuel Etu and Rolex Ada.

In his remarks, the panel chairman, Mohammed Abubakar, assured the government and stakeholders of the panel’s commitment to carrying out its duties thoroughly.

“We are aware of the weight of this assignment. We will leave no stone unturned in unearthing the facts and will offer recommendations that can stand the test of time,” he stated.

The visitation panel’s intervention comes amid growing concerns over governance breakdown and union-related disputes that have disrupted operations at the Akoka-based institution in recent months.
