The Federal Government has mandated that universities in Nigeria must achieve a minimum score of 70 per cent in four critical areas—Academic Matters, Staffing, Physical Facilities, and Library services—to qualify for full accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
This was disclosed in a statement released on Thursday and signed by the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Professor Abdullahi Ribadu. He emphasized that the accreditation process is thorough and aimed at maintaining high academic standards across institutions.
“The accreditation instrument used in the process comprises seven sections, with four—Academic Matters, Staffing, Physical Facilities, and Library—classified as core areas,” Ribadu stated.
He further explained that to earn full accreditation, a programme must secure at least 70 per cent in each of the four core components, in addition to an overall score of 70 per cent or higher.
“Achieving Full Accreditation Status does not necessarily mean that a programme has met every requirement in absolute terms. Rather, it reflects an acceptable level of performance, with potential for further development,” he added.
Professor Ribadu also highlighted that the NUC operates one of the most comprehensive quality assurance systems on the African continent.
