FG Reaffirms Stable Academic Calendar, Staff Welfare at FUT Minna Convocation

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to a stable academic calendar, improved staff welfare and wider access to quality tertiary education across Nigeria.

President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, gave the assurance at the 34th Convocation Ceremony and 43rd Founders’ Day of the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUT Minna), where he was represented by the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad.

Delivering the President’s address, Prof. Ahmad said innovation, science and human capital development remain central pillars of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda. She commended FUT Minna for its growing contributions to national development in engineering, agriculture, healthcare, energy and the digital economy.

President Tinubu urged the university to strengthen partnerships with the private sector and align academic programmes with emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy, robotics, advanced manufacturing and data science. He also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s resolve to sustain industrial harmony within the university system to ensure uninterrupted academic activities.

Highlighting ongoing interventions, the President announced the introduction of a zero-interest Staff Loan Scheme in collaboration with the Bank of Industry (BOI), with ₦40 billion slated for disbursement in 2026. He also disclosed that the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has so far disbursed over ₦50 billion to about 624,535 students across 303 tertiary institutions nationwide.

In his goodwill message, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi (Odundun II), CFR, the Deji of Akure and Chairman of the Ondo State Council of Obas, congratulated the graduands and charged them to uphold excellence, integrity and good character in their careers.

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Dr. Mohammed Kudu Santuraki, described FUT Minna as a steadily advancing centre of excellence in science, technology and innovation.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, announced that a total of 5,297 students graduated, including 4,438 first-degree holders, 73 postgraduate diploma recipients, 633 master’s degree graduates and 153 PhD awardees.

He also revealed that FUT Minna was ranked 7th best university in Nigeria and emerged as the highest-ranked specialised university in the country in the 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, a milestone he said reflects the institution’s rising global profile.

The ceremony marked another step in the Federal Government’s push to reposition Nigerian universities for global competitiveness and national development.
