ABUJA — The Federal Government has directed all tertiary institutions across Nigeria to comply with a mandatory annual data submission and financial reporting schedule through the newly launched Federal Tertiary Institutions Governance and Transparency Portal (FTIGTP).
The directive was issued by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, in Abuja during the official unveiling of the FTIGTP — a flagship initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education designed to promote transparency, accountability, and good governance across the nation’s higher education system.
Alausa stated that all federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education must submit comprehensive institutional and financial reports on the portal within the first quarter of every year, noting that compliance would form part of each institution’s performance evaluation by both local and international partners.
“The FTIGTP serves as a single, nationwide source of accurate data and financial information about tertiary institutions. It guards against misuse of funds and fosters trust in the management of our higher education system,” Alausa said.
He explained that for the first time, Nigeria now has a unified digital platform offering real-time visibility into key metrics — including student enrolment, government funding, capital and recurrent expenditure, TETFund allocations, NELFund interventions, research grants, and other performance indicators.
A New Era in Education Governance
The minister noted that the launch of the FTIGTP marks a new phase in education management, resolving decades of fragmented and inconsistent data reporting across tertiary institutions.
“For years, data on Nigeria’s tertiary education system have been scattered across multiple reports and formats. This platform solves that challenge and ensures accuracy, accessibility, and accountability,” he said.
Alausa added that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasizes accountability, transparency, and efficient resource management in the education sector.
He further revealed that funding and interventions will henceforth be tied to compliance with transparency benchmarks, adding that all institutions must obtain an annual ICT clearance certificate from the Director of ICT before accessing TETFund ICT interventions.
Institutions Urged to Cooperate
The minister called on Vice Chancellors, Rectors, Provosts, and other institutional leaders to take ownership of the process through timely and accurate submissions.
“To our Vice Chancellors, Rectors, Provosts, and institutional heads — your cooperation and commitment are vital. The success of this innovation depends on your active participation and prompt reporting,” Alausa said.
The launch event drew participants from across Nigeria’s tertiary education landscape, including Vice Chancellors, Rectors, Provosts, education policy experts, and development partners.
According to the Ministry, the FTIGTP will soon be expanded to include private and state-owned tertiary institutions, creating a unified, data-driven, and transparent higher education ecosystem nationwide.
