The Federal Government has officially launched the University Innovation Pod (UniPod) at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) as part of a broader initiative aimed at transforming Nigerian universities into centres of innovation, digital talent development, and enterprise creation.
The innovation hub was unveiled on April 7, 2026, during a high-level event attended by government officials, academics, technology experts, and development partners. The project is being implemented through a partnership between the Federal Government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The UniPod initiative is designed to create a structured innovation ecosystem within universities, enabling students and researchers to develop ideas, transform them into practical solutions, and launch technology-driven startups capable of addressing societal challenges.
According to government officials, the initiative seeks to bridge the gap between academic learning and the labour market by providing platforms where research, talent, investment, and industry collaboration can intersect to produce real economic value.
Speaking on the programme, the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmad, described the UniPods as innovation ecosystems that will empower young Nigerians with digital and entrepreneurial skills needed to compete in the modern knowledge economy. She urged students to take advantage of the platform to develop creative solutions and build enterprises that can contribute to national development.
Also speaking, the UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria, Elsie Gyekyewaa Attafuah, explained that the initiative marks a shift from policy intentions to practical implementation by providing infrastructure and mentorship that enable innovators to convert ideas into commercially viable products and businesses.
The Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, noted that the institution has positioned itself as a leader in artificial intelligence research and innovation, adding that the UniPod will strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration among students, researchers, and industry partners.
The AI-focused hub at UNILAG is the first in a planned network of specialised innovation centres that will be established across universities nationwide. Other institutions expected to host UniPods include Nasarawa State University, Keffi; University of Uyo; Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike; Benue State University, Makurdi; and the University of Maiduguri, each focusing on priority sectors such as mining technology, agriculture, manufacturing, and resilience innovation.
Stakeholders say the nationwide expansion of the UniPod network will help strengthen Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem, foster entrepreneurship among students, and position the country as a major hub for digital talent and technology-driven economic growth in Africa.
