The Federal Government has inaugurated the Federal University of Environment and Technology, a pioneering institution dedicated to addressing environmental and technological challenges facing Nigeria and the global community.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced this on Monday in Abuja during the inauguration of the university’s governing council and principal officers. Located in Koroma, Rivers State, the university is the first of its kind in Nigeria and was approved by President Bola Tinubu in February 2025.
According to Alausa, the establishment of the university is not merely an expansion of Nigeria’s tertiary education landscape but a strategic move to deliver research-driven solutions to pressing environmental issues. He charged the governing council to provide visionary leadership, uphold merit, ensure accountability, and protect the institution’s autonomy in line with existing laws and policies.
“Today’s ceremony represents another critical step in the Federal Government’s efforts to expand equitable access to quality higher education, particularly in strategic fields that address both national and global development needs, notably environmental sustainability and technological innovation,” Alausa stated.
He urged the council to guide the institution on academic policy, budgetary discipline, and institutional growth while fostering harmony among stakeholders. Warning against political or parochial interference, the minister emphasised that the success of the university would depend on the “strength of character and collective wisdom” of its leadership.
Addressing the Vice-Chancellor and other pioneer officers, Alausa congratulated them on their appointments, urging them to set high standards that align with global best practices. He called for a focus on faculty development, student experience, strategic partnerships, and community engagement, particularly with the host community and relevant agencies.
“The foundation you lay today will shape the future of the university for generations. Your success will contribute meaningfully to the sustainable development of the Niger Delta and Nigeria at large,” he said.
