FG Introduces National Student ID System to Track Learning, Curb Examination Fraud

The Federal Government has unveiled a nationwide digital identification system for students aimed at improving education monitoring, strengthening data management, and tackling examination malpractice..

The initiative, known as the Learner Identification Number (LIN), assigns every student a unique and permanent academic identity that will follow them throughout their educational journey. Education authorities say the system will enable policymakers to track students’ academic progress while improving planning and oversight within the sector.

Announcing the initiative, the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, described the project as a significant step toward modernising Nigeria’s education system through technology and data-driven governance. According to him, the platform is designed to strengthen accountability while enabling authorities to better understand learning patterns across the country.

In the first phase of implementation, more than 1.9 million candidates preparing for the 2026 examinations conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) have already been assigned identification numbers.

Officials explained that beyond tracking students’ academic journeys, the system will also help curb examination malpractice—particularly impersonation—by linking each candidate to a verified identity within the national education database.

The digital platform is integrated into Nigeria’s broader education data system, allowing authorities to monitor enrolment trends, identify out-of-school children, and track dropout patterns in real time. Education planners believe the data generated will help guide future policy decisions and resource allocation in the sector.

According to government officials, the system will eventually be expanded to include both public and private schools nationwide, forming part of wider reforms aimed at creating a transparent, efficient, and technology-driven education system.

The development comes amid increasing calls for stronger accountability in Nigeria’s education sector, with policymakers increasingly turning to digital solutions to address long-standing challenges in student management, examination integrity, and education planning.
