The Federal Government has disbursed a total of N11.8 billion in interest-free loans to 6,842 staff of tertiary institutions across Nigeria, as part of ongoing reforms under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative.
According to official data released by the Federal Ministry of Education Nigeria, the loan scheme allows eligible staff to access up to N10 million at zero interest, with beneficiaries drawn from 141 institutions nationwide. The ministry disclosed that over 34,000 applicants from 219 institutions have been verified under the programme.
A breakdown of beneficiaries shows that federal universities account for 59 per cent, followed by polytechnics at 23 per cent and colleges of education at 18 per cent. To qualify, applicants must have a minimum of five years remaining before retirement.
In a related intervention aimed at easing mobility challenges within campuses, the government also facilitated the distribution of 240 e-tricycles across 12 tertiary institutions.
The loan initiative forms part of a broader reform agenda designed to improve staff welfare, enhance institutional efficiency and strengthen the overall education system.
Other flagship programmes under the initiative include the EduRevamp Teacher Platform, a digital training system introduced earlier in 2026 to upgrade teachers’ competencies, and the School Safety Portal Nigeria, developed in collaboration with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to bolster security management in schools.
The ministry revealed that the EduRevamp platform, launched during the National Teacher Summit in January 2026, has recorded 37,000 registered users, with 18,000 teachers fully enrolled in its training modules. The platform offers multimedia learning resources, including audio-visual lessons, case studies and certification pathways for continuous professional development.
Meanwhile, the School Safety Portal—established under the School Safety Act 2025—currently hosts data on more than 156,000 geolocated schools nationwide, providing authorities with improved tools for monitoring and emergency response planning.
Education stakeholders say the combined interventions signal a renewed push by the Federal Government to address longstanding structural challenges in Nigeria’s education sector.
