The Federal Government has invited qualified Nigerian university graduates to apply for the 2027/2028 Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowship Plan, with applications closing on October 20, 2026.
The scholarship opportunity, announced by the Federal Ministry of Education and shared by the Lagos State Scholarship Board, is open to Nigerians seeking to pursue postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom.
The scholarships cover one-year taught Master’s programmes and doctoral programmes of up to three years.
The announcement was issued by the Department of Scholarship Awards of the Federal Ministry of Education, formerly known as the Federal Scholarship Board, and signed by the Director overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Dr Folake Olatunji-David, on behalf of the Minister of Education.
Eligibility requirements
According to the ministry, applicants for the Master’s scholarship must possess a first degree with at least a Second Class Upper Division.
For the doctoral category, candidates must hold a relevant Master’s degree and have obtained at least a Second Class Lower Division in their first degree.
Applicants for both categories are required to have secured admission to at least two eligible universities in the United Kingdom.
Doctoral applicants must also submit a supporting statement from a prospective supervisor at one of their chosen UK institutions.
The ministry listed evidence of participation in the National Youth Service Corps among the eligibility requirements.
It said applications would be assessed based on three major criteria: academic merit, development impact upon completion and the quality of the proposed study plan.
Application process
The ministry said all applications must be submitted through the Electronic Application System.
Prospective applicants are required to register on the application portal, complete the online form and upload the necessary supporting documents.
These include a passport photograph, university academic transcripts, birth certificate and admission letters from UK institutions listed in the application.
Applicants with foreign certificates must provide official translations and evaluation documents where applicable.
After completing the online application, candidates are required to generate a PDF copy of the completed form, download and print one hard copy for submission at the designated interview venue.
The deadline for submission of applications is October 20, 2026.
Areas of priority
The Federal Ministry of Education advised applicants to ensure that their proposed programmes and study plans are relevant to Nigeria’s developmental needs.
The priority areas identified by the ministry include education, health, economic growth and the private sector, governance and conflict, climate and the environment, water and sanitation, engineering, science and technology, food and nutrition, as well as humanitarian disasters and emergencies.
The ministry urged prospective candidates to carefully align their proposed studies with these development priorities when preparing their applications.
Applicants were also advised to consult the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission for detailed information on the scholarship, eligibility requirements and selection criteria.
