The Federal Government has intensified plans to establish an Armed Forces College of Medicine and Health Sciences as part of a broader strategy to expand specialised medical education and reinforce Nigeria’s science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) ecosystem.
The initiative is being driven by the Federal Ministry of Education Nigeria in line with the reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritises capacity building in critical sectors through targeted education and professional training.
According to ministry officials, the proposed institution will operate within the framework of the Nigerian Defence Academy and is designed to produce highly skilled, combat-ready medical professionals capable of addressing personnel shortages in both Nigeria’s defence and healthcare systems.
Education authorities noted that Nigeria continues to grapple with a deficit of medical practitioners, particularly those trained for specialised military, trauma, and emergency environments. The new college is expected to widen access to professional medical education while introducing a structured pathway that combines academic rigour with defence-oriented clinical training.
Admission into the programme will be conducted through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), ensuring compliance with national tertiary education standards. Graduates of the institution will be commissioned into the Armed Forces, reflecting an integrated model that blends higher education, leadership development, and national service.
The ministry described the project as a strategic investment in education-driven health security. A multi-agency technical working group has reportedly been constituted to accelerate curriculum design, accreditation procedures, and operational planning ahead of the proposed admission cycle scheduled for late 2026.
Beyond strengthening defence healthcare capacity, officials emphasised that the college represents a long-term commitment to fortifying Nigeria’s medical education pipeline, fostering innovation, and equipping future professionals with the expertise required to operate in complex and high-pressure environments.
