In a sweeping reform aimed at curbing over-enrollment and restoring infrastructure efficiency, the Federal Ministry of Education has announced the full automation of admission processes into all Federal Unity Colleges across Nigeria.
According to a statement released Tuesday by Mrs. Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations at the ministry, admissions will now be strictly conducted within the approved carrying capacity of each school — a shift from years of overpopulation and strained resources.
The initiative, which covers 80 conventional Unity Colleges offering Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1) placements, is designed to enhance transparency, enforce capacity compliance, and improve overall accountability in the selection process. The automation also ensures that Unity Colleges uphold national education standards without compromising infrastructure or learning quality.
Boriowo noted that admission results can now be accessed directly via the Ministry’s official portal: [www.education.gov.ng](http://www.education.gov.ng), eliminating manual bottlenecks and enhancing public trust in the process.
The reform is part of a broader overhaul targeting not only conventional Unity Colleges but also Federal Technical Colleges. Admission into the 42 institutions under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme will be announced separately, the ministry said.
This follows the Federal Government's June 2025 directive converting all Federal Science and Technical Colleges into Federal Technical Colleges, with the new academic intake set for September 2025. The policy shift was preceded by the inaugural National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) into TVET Class 1, in which over 29,000 candidates participated nationwide.
**Understanding the Admission Process**
Entry into Federal Unity Colleges begins with the NCEE, conducted annually by the National Examinations Council (NECO). The 2025 edition took place on Saturday, June 14, across centers in Nigeria, Benin Republic, and Togo.
Candidates are assessed in Mathematics, English Studies, General Studies, and both Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning — subjects aimed at evaluating their preparedness for secondary education.
Nigeria currently boasts 104 Unity Colleges, with at least one in each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. These schools have historically faced overcrowding and declining facility quality due to unregulated admission practices.
The ministry’s new automated system is expected to restore equilibrium, ensuring students are admitted based on merit and within resource limits, thereby enhancing the quality of education delivered in these federally funded institutions.
