Public primary and secondary schools across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were shut down on Monday as teachers complied with the directive of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) to commence an indefinite strike over unresolved welfare and promotion issues.

A visit to several schools in Abuja, including those within the Abuja Municipal Area Council, showed deserted premises, with classrooms locked and no academic activities taking place as both teachers and students stayed away.

The strike, which began following the expiration of earlier ultimatums issued to the FCT Administration, was ordered by the State Wing Executive Council of the NUT after what it described as the government’s failure to address outstanding demands affecting teachers’ welfare and career progression.

The union had instructed all public school teachers in the territory to withdraw their services indefinitely until their demands were met, warning parents to keep their children at home for safety and to avoid disruptions.

Key grievances raised by the teachers include delayed implementation of committee reports on entitlements, unresolved promotion issues, and the removal of conditions attached to career advancement.

Despite acknowledging some interventions by the FCT Administration, including the payment of minimum wage and arrears, the union maintained that several critical issues affecting teachers’ welfare remained unresolved.

The strike is expected to significantly disrupt academic activities across public schools in Abuja, leaving thousands of pupils and students out of classrooms indefinitely as negotiations between both parties continue.
