The Provost of the Federal College of Education (FCE), Ofeme, Abia State, Dr. Titus Ezeme, has made a clarion call for increased support from individuals, corporate bodies, and education advocates to complement government efforts in equipping teacher training institutions for quality delivery.
Speaking on Monday during the formal presentation of a set of books donated to the college library by Mr. S.K. Nwokoye, a retired lecturer from the Federal College of Education (Technical), Umunze, Dr. Ezeme emphasized that the burden of preparing Nigeria’s next generation of teachers must not rest solely on the shoulders of government.
“Training competent and well-rounded teachers is a collective responsibility,” Ezeme stated. “With quality, well-trained teachers, the academic future of our children — and by extension, the future of our country — is assured.”
The donation, according to the Provost, reflects the kind of civic-minded gestures that can significantly boost the teaching and learning environment in newly established institutions like FCE Ofeme. He described the contribution as timely and impactful, particularly as the college continues to expand its academic resources.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the institution, the College Librarian, Mr. Bulus Damen, expressed appreciation to both the donor and the Provost. “This generous gesture sets a precedent for others to follow,” Damen said. “We assure you that the books will be effectively utilized in line with our college’s motto: To educate, to liberate the mind.”
Dr. Ezeme also led stakeholders on an inspection tour of ongoing infrastructural projects on campus, including lecture halls, administrative blocks, and a 72-bed hostel facility. He lauded the Federal Government and the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, for their roles in bringing the institution to life.
“What began as a mere idea has now blossomed into a thriving academic community,” he said. “Lectures have commenced in earnest, and we’ve already admitted over 150 students in our pioneer cohort.”
The Provost concluded by appealing to the Federal Government for sustained support to enable the young institution fulfill its core mandate of producing qualified teachers capable of driving national development.
As FCE Ofeme finds its footing, Ezeme’s message is clear: building a world-class teacher education system requires not only policy and funding but the active involvement of all sectors of society.
