The debate over the correct use of *host* and *hostess* resurfaced this week after a language enthusiast asked whether a woman anchoring a television programme could be addressed as a “host.”
Traditionally, *host* referred to men and *hostess* to women, much like *king* and *queen.* However, in modern English, *host* has evolved into a gender-neutral term widely accepted for both men and women.
As a noun, *host* carries multiple meanings. It can describe someone receiving visitors at home or in an office, a person welcoming and seating guests at a restaurant or event, or a programme anchor on television and radio. Importantly, in all these contexts, *host* can be used for both genders.
For instance:
* *Being the host, Mr. Johnson was everywhere at the party.*
* *Being the host, Mrs. Johnson was everywhere at the party.*
* *Being the hostess, Mrs. Johnson was everywhere at the party.*
When it comes to television or radio, both *host* and *hostess* are correct for women, though contemporary usage leans heavily towards *host* as the preferred form. Thus, it is perfectly correct to say:
* *Mrs. Brown is no longer the host of “Your View.”*
Meanwhile, in the aviation industry, the terminology shifts. The word *flight attendant* is now the standard gender-neutral term, while *air host/air hostess* and *steward/stewardess* are increasingly viewed as outdated. *Cabin crew* is used collectively to describe the entire in-flight team.
Linguists agree that while *hostess* is still correct, the trend in formal and professional settings is to use *host* for both men and women, reflecting the broader movement towards gender-neutral language.
