Former lawmaker representing Jos South/East Federal Constituency, Dachung Bagos, has expressed doubts about the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) readiness for the 2027 general elections, citing persistent internal crises and procedural lapses within the party.
Speaking on Channels Television’s breakfast programme on Monday, Bagos criticised the party’s leadership for failing to follow due process, including issuing only one nomination form for the recent chairmanship contest — a move later nullified by the courts.
Bagos also condemned the expulsion and suspension procedures carried out during the PDP’s convention, noting that no disciplinary committee was properly constituted before taking action against members.
“For now, I don’t see any light at the end of the tunnel for the PDP coming towards the general election, especially for anybody who intends to contest,” Bagos said. “Due process is not being adhered to. Those contesting elections should carefully analyse the situation, consult widely, and plan their next steps. We must be political with the truth.”
He further highlighted that Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang remains the state’s political leader, saying party members and aspirants will follow his guidance if the PDP fails to resolve its challenges.
“But I can tell you for now, the leader of the ‘Plateau Peoples Party’ is His Excellency Barr. Caleb Mutfwang. We are waiting for his direction to see which of the registered parties to move to if the PDP fails to fix itself before the election,” Bagos added.
The remarks come in the wake of the 2025 PDP National Convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, where the party elected Kabiru Turaki as National Chairman and Taofeek Arapaja as National Secretary. Several high-profile members, including Nyesom Wike, Samuel Anyanwu, Ayo Fayose, and others, were expelled or suspended over alleged anti-party activities.
The expulsions were moved by Bode George, seconded by Samaila Buga, and put to a voice vote by Governor Bala Mohammed, chair of the PDP Governors’ Forum, which delegates overwhelmingly endorsed.
Bagos’ critique underscores ongoing tensions within the PDP, raising questions about the party’s cohesion and prospects as it prepares for the 2027 elections.
