The Education Writers Association of Nigeria (EWAN) has unveiled plans for its 2025 Annual Summit, a forum dedicated to tackling Nigeria’s longstanding obsession with paper qualifications and the integrity of public examinations.
Now in its sixth edition, the summit will take place at the Julius Berger Auditorium, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, with the theme:
“Nigeria’s Obsession with Paper Qualification and Integrity of Public Examinations: Is TVET the Way Forward?”
According to EWAN, the gathering will bring together major stakeholders across the education, manufacturing, and technical sectors to examine the growing challenges within Nigeria’s qualification-driven culture and the role of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in creating a more skills-based, competency-driven system.
The association said the summit aims to ignite a national conversation on shifting from certificate-based achievement to practical skills acquisition—an urgent need as the country battles high unemployment and widening skills gaps.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, is billed to deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to highlight government efforts to strengthen TVET and address persistent issues affecting the conduct and credibility of public examinations.
His presentation will be reviewed by top education assessment leaders, including:

Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)

Dr. Amos Dangut, Head, Nigeria Office of WAEC

Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi, Registrar/CEO, National Examinations Council (NECO)
Experts from the technical and vocational landscape—such as Prof. Idris Bugaje, Executive Secretary, National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and Morounke Azeez, Executive Secretary of LASTVEB—will also share insights on how TVET can help reduce unemployment and close Nigeria’s critical skills gap. Representatives of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) and other industry bodies are also expected to participate.
The event will be hosted by UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, while the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, serves as Chief Host.
Renowned education advocate and former LASTVEB Executive Secretary, Olawunmi Gasper, will chair the occasion.

Chairperson of the Planning Committee, Mrs. Iyabo Lawal, reaffirmed EWAN’s commitment to bridging the gap between policymakers and the public, noting that the association strives not only to report education issues but also to contribute meaningfully to reforming Nigeria’s education landscape.
