ESUT Begins Fencing to Enhance Security, Records 7,991 Graduands at 21st Convocation

Enugu, Nigeria – Nineteen years after relocating to its permanent site in Agbani, Nkanu West Local Government Area, the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has begun a fencing project aimed at enhancing campus security and preventing land encroachment.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, announced the development, revealing that the Enugu State Government has allocated approximately N1.4 billion for the initiative. He explained that the fencing would help preserve the university’s dignity and enable it to operate more effectively.

Prof. Okolie noted that while the government had initially provided staff offices and accommodation, security concerns had left many facilities unused, forcing staff to operate from Enugu urban, a factor that has slowed the university’s growth. “We are hopeful that when the fencing is completed, it will help restore some of the things that are lacking in this school. We have facilities that should be mounted, but we cannot because you cannot guarantee their security,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor highlighted other government interventions under Governor Peter Mbah, including:

Over N10 billion invested in equipping the Nursing and Midwifery laboratory
Upgrades to the entrepreneurship centre and toilet facilities
Expansion of the CBT centre/seats at the Colliery Hospital
Construction of twin six-storey buildings for offices, radiology/laboratory complex, hostel facilities, and teaching hospital halls

Speaking at ESUT’s 21st convocation ceremony, Prof. Okolie commended the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) for supporting students, noting that over N107 million had been disbursed despite initial challenges. He encouraged students yet to join the scheme to take advantage of it to meet their educational needs.

A total of 7,991 graduands participated in the convocation, including 6,625 first-degree, 212 postgraduate diploma, 720 Master’s degree, and 434 doctorate recipients. Academic achievements included 14 first-class honours, 1,646 second-class upper, 4,619 second-class lower, 113 third-class, and 233 passes.

The Vice-Chancellor also announced that ESUT had been selected as a beneficiary of the European Union-funded ERASMUS capacity-building project, offering a Master of Science in Smart Farming and IoT in Agriculture.

Addressing poor accommodation on campus, Prof. Okolie confirmed that his administration is actively engaging private investors to resolve the issue and further improve student welfare.
