EKSU Debunks Viral Video Alleging Extortion of Final-Year Students

The Management of Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti (EKSU), has dismissed as false and malicious a viral social-media video claiming that some staff demand illegal “sweeteners,” locally called owo ayo..

The allegations were made in a video posted by a content creator identified as Oluwagold, who accused clearance officers of requesting unofficial payments before attending to students. EKSU, however, described the content as misleading and crafted solely to attract online attention.

In an official statement signed by the Deputy Registrar and Head of the Directorate of Information and Corporate Affairs, Dr. Olofinmuagun Bode, the institution labelled the claim as baseless, unfounded, and deliberately targeted at denting the university’s reputation. He stressed that EKSU maintains strict standards on staff integrity and ensures that all administrative activities follow due process.

Dr. Bode also noted that the University Management holds regular meetings with Students’ Union leaders to address student-related concerns. At no time, he said, was any issue related to owo ayo raised during these engagements.

The statement further highlighted that EKSU operates an official complaints channel via speakup@eksu.edu.ng, where students can report cases of misconduct. According to the Management, no complaint on extortion or clearance malpractice has been received.

Describing the viral video as “totally unacceptable,” the University advised students, parents, and the general public to disregard it entirely, insisting that it does not reflect the true situation on campus.

Reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy for extortion and unethical behaviour, EKSU said robust mechanisms are in place to address any legitimate grievances. Students were urged to use internal reporting platforms rather than resorting to social media, which often fuels misinformation.

The University reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability, and maintaining a conducive academic environment. Dr. Olofinmuagun warned against spreading unverified claims that could damage the credibility of dedicated staff, urging students to engage the institution directly when concerns arise.
