It was a day of pride and celebration at the Eko University of Medicine and Health Sciences (EkoUNIMED), Ijanikin, Lagos, as the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) inducted the university’s first cohort of 20 medical doctors into the medical profession.
The induction ceremony, held at the university’s main auditorium, marked a significant milestone in the history of the young institution, established to produce competent, ethical, and compassionate healthcare professionals for Nigeria’s health sector.
Administering the Hippocratic Oath, the Registrar of the MDCN, Prof. Fatima Kyari, charged the inductees to uphold the highest standards of medical ethics and professionalism, reminding them that the practice of medicine demands lifelong learning, empathy, and integrity.
In his address, the Vice Chancellor of EkoUNIMED, Prof. Gbolahan Awosanya, described the event as the realisation of a long-cherished dream for the university.
“This is the first set of doctors produced by our institution,” he said. “Today, we celebrate the fulfilment of a vision — to raise skilled, compassionate, and ethical professionals who will serve humanity with integrity.”
Prof. Awosanya congratulated the new doctors for their perseverance and excellence, urging them to make meaningful contributions to Nigeria’s healthcare system.
“Medicine is a sacred calling. Uphold the values you have learnt here, and always place service above self,” he advised.
Also speaking, former Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. John Obafunwa, who is also a pathologist and lawyer, advised the new doctors to remain committed to their calling and to avoid joining incessant strikes that disrupt healthcare delivery.
“Always remember that the patients you abandon could be your own relatives,” he cautioned, calling for constructive engagement and professionalism in addressing grievances.
The Founder and Proprietor of EkoUNIMED, Chief Hammed Ibrahim, commended the graduating doctors and called on wealthy Nigerians to invest in medical education by establishing institutions that can strengthen Nigeria’s health system and reduce medical brain drain.
The Best Graduating Doctor, Dr. Adejumoke Adenuga, expressed gratitude for the recognition, attributing her success to hard work, perseverance, and the unwavering support of her lecturers and colleagues.
“This achievement is not mine alone — it belongs to everyone who guided and believed in me throughout this journey,” she said.
The ceremony concluded with resounding applause as the new doctors took their professional oaths, symbolizing the beginning of their service to humanity and the continuation of EkoUNIMED’s mission to shape the future of healthcare in Nigeria.
