Ado‑Ekiti, Nigeria — February 3, 2026 — Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has urged state‑owned universities to uphold stable and predictable academic calendars, describing them as vital to improving educational quality and restoring public confidence in the state’s higher education system.
Addressing the senior management team of Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere‑Ekiti (BOUESTI), led by newly appointed Vice‑Chancellor Prof. Babatunde Omojola, Oyebanji stressed that frequent disruptions to academic activities erode student learning outcomes and place unnecessary financial and emotional burdens on parents and guardians.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the governor noted that an uninterrupted academic calendar not only fosters academic excellence but also enhances the appeal of institutions to prospective students, researchers, and development partners — a key objective of his administration’s development agenda.
“We must strengthen dialogue among university managements, governing councils, staff and union leaders and adopt proactive conflict‑resolution mechanisms to avert avoidable strikes and prolonged closures that negatively affect students,” Oyebanji said, urging all stakeholders to commit to peaceful engagement and institutional stability.
Highlighting BOUESTI’s growth trajectory as one of the fastest‑expanding state‑owned universities in Nigeria, the governor attributed its rising profile to the institution’s maintenance of a stable academic calendar — a factor he said has boosted enrolment and parent confidence.
Oyebanji also congratulated Prof. Omojola on his appointment as the university’s second substantive Vice‑Chancellor, underscoring that the choice was strictly merit‑based and expressing confidence that the new leader would build on the achievements of his predecessor, Professor Victor Adeoluwa, particularly in preserving the school’s academic stability.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to investing in infrastructure, staff welfare and institutional reforms, the governor said these measures are crucial to making Ekiti’s state universities competitive on both national and global stages.
In his remarks, Omojola thanked the governor for his confidence, attributing the university’s progress to the administration’s strong support for education. He outlined his vision to position BOUESTI among the top 10 universities in Nigeria, top 100 in Africa and top 1,000 globally through sustained academic excellence, research innovation and institutional stability.
Present at the meeting were senior government officials including the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Habibat Adubiaro; Chief of Staff, Mr. Niyi Adebayo; Commissioner for Education, Dr. Bimpe Aderiye; and senior advisers on tertiary education and media.
