The Oyo State Government and key stakeholders in the education sector have emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among government, alumni associations, parents, and host communities to enhance the quality of public education across the state.
The call was made on Saturday during the commissioning of multiple educational and infrastructural projects executed by the Old Students Association of United Secondary School (Senior), Agugu (USSA), Ibadan.
Representing the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Olusegun Olayiwola, the Permanent Secretary, Ibadan Zone One Education School Inspectorate, Mr. Kareem Lukman, described the intervention as a commendable demonstration of giving back to society and supporting educational development.
Lukman noted that government alone could not bear the burden of transforming the education sector, stressing the importance of collective action by stakeholders to address challenges facing public schools.
According to him, the projects underscore the benefits of an inclusive education system and highlight how beneficiaries of public education can contribute meaningfully to the growth of institutions that shaped their future.
“Government cannot do it all alone. All stakeholders must work together to ensure continuous improvement in the quality of education,” he said, while encouraging more alumni groups, corporate organisations, and well-meaning individuals to support educational institutions.
He also emphasized that maintaining security within schools and communities remains a shared responsibility.
Speaking on the significance of the projects, a member of the school's 1986 Set and major sponsor of the intervention, Dr. Olumuyiwa Adedeji, described the initiative as a strategic investment in future generations rather than merely a provision of physical infrastructure.
He said the projects, which include an ICT Centre, sports complex, library, science laboratories, drainage system, improved sanitation facilities, and a renovated school entrance, were designed to inspire learning, nurture talent, and empower students to achieve their full potential.
“These projects send a clear message that we believe in the future of this institution and are willing to invest in the education, development, and success of generations yet to come,” Adedeji stated.
He stressed that the next phase of the school's development should focus on improving teaching and learning outcomes through continuous teacher training, access to modern educational resources, technology integration, and innovative instructional methods.
According to him, students must be equipped with not only academic knowledge but also critical thinking abilities, creativity, digital literacy, communication skills, and strong values needed to thrive in an increasingly competitive world.
Adedeji further called for stronger partnerships among the school management, parents, alumni, traditional institutions, and the host community to sustain the gains recorded and maintain a safe, clean, and conducive learning environment.
He expressed optimism that United Secondary School would evolve into a centre of excellence, producing globally competitive graduates distinguished by integrity, discipline, hard work, and service.
“As we move forward, let us commit ourselves to one principle: that the success of our school is greater than the success of any individual, group, or generation,” he added.
Earlier, the National President of USSA, Mr. Salawu Taiwo, explained that the intervention was conceived to support educational advancement and prepare students for emerging trends in learning and assessment.
He said the ICT Centre was prioritised in recognition of the growing importance of digital education and the increasing adoption of computer-based examinations in Nigeria.
Taiwo disclosed that the intervention also included the renovation and repainting of facilities, upgrades to the library and science laboratories, rehabilitation of the school field and pavilion, and conversion of classroom spaces to improve academic activities.
In her remarks, the Principal of the school, Mrs. Grace Adika, described the commissioning as a landmark event in the institution’s history.
She commended Dr. Adedeji and members of the 1986 Set for their commitment to improving the learning environment, noting that the projects would significantly enhance teaching and learning while exposing students to opportunities in a technology-driven world.
According to her, the newly commissioned facilities include an ultra-modern ICT laboratory, refurbished science laboratories, a standard football field with pavilion, a school hall, and other rehabilitated infrastructure aimed at promoting academic excellence.
The event was attended by education stakeholders, government officials, alumni members, traditional rulers, community leaders, parents, teachers, and students.
