Education Boost: NECO Honours Kano State for Two-Year Achievement

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has presented an Award of Excellence to the Kano State Government for ranking as the second-best state in the sponsorship and registration of candidates for the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for two consecutive academic sessions.

The recognition covers the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 academic years and was conferred during the grand finale of NECO’s 25th anniversary celebration held at the International Conference Centre on Thursday. The event brought together education stakeholders, policymakers, and dignitaries from across the country to mark the council’s 25 years of contributions to credible examinations and educational development.

Receiving the award on behalf of the state government, the Kano State Commissioner for Education, Ali Haryna Abubakar Makoda, described the honour as a testament to the administration’s sustained investment in education and its commitment to expanding access for eligible students.

Makoda dedicated the award to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, teachers, students, and education officials in the state, noting that their collective efforts made the achievement possible.

According to him, Kano State has consistently prioritised education as a key pillar of sustainable development, mobilising resources to sponsor and register thousands of students for national examinations over the past two years.

“This award reflects the hard work and perseverance of the state government and its resolve to prioritise education as the foundation for sustainable development in Kano society. For two consecutive years, Kano State has mobilised resources to sponsor and register thousands of children for NECO examinations, and the state will not relent,” he said.

The commissioner added that the recognition aligns with the state’s ongoing education reform agenda under its education emergency recovery plan, which focuses on improving learning outcomes, strengthening infrastructure, and expanding access to education, particularly for adolescent girls and young people.

He also expressed appreciation to NECO for the recognition and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to maintaining high standards in candidate sponsorship, registration processes, and adherence to examination ethics.
