Edo State Secures ₦1.2 Billion OPay Education Grant for Ambrose Alli University Benin City, Nigeria – 15 July 2025

Digital Services for Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday.

The grant, part of OPay’s national scholarship initiative, will support indigent students at 20 tertiary institutions across Nigeria through tuition assistance and bursaries. Under the agreement, ₦1.2 billion will be earmarked specifically for the AAU student body.

At the signing ceremony, Ms. Sally Suleiman, Special Adviser to the Edo State Governor on Sustainable Development Goals, described the partnership as proof of the state’s commitment to inclusive education and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4, which promotes equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities.

“The grant will provide vital financial backing for students from low‑income families,” Suleiman said. “This is a major step toward removing economic barriers to higher education in Edo State.”

Key provisions of the MoU include immediate disbursement of the first tranche of scholarship awards to qualifying AAU students, and the establishment of a joint monitoring and evaluation framework to ensure effective implementation.

Suleiman also emphasized the state’s willingness to pursue further public‑private collaborations to advance education and other development targets.
