The Edo State Government has announced the postponement of school resumption for all public and private institutions in the Edo Central Senatorial District, citing the need to address emerging security and welfare issues in the area.

The directive was contained in a statement released on Monday by the Commissioner for Education, Paddy Iyamu, who explained that the suspension would remain in effect until further notice.

“The postponement of school resumption in Edo Central Senatorial District is to enable the government to address certain exigencies and improve the welfare of pupils and students,” Iyamu said.

He assured that a new resumption date would be communicated soon and urged parents, guardians, and education stakeholders to comply with the directive.

The Edo Central district, which includes Ekpoma—headquarters of Esan West Local Government Area and a major university town—has witnessed heightened tension following recent unrest triggered by protests over recurring incidents of kidnapping.

Governor Monday Okpebholo and top security heads reportedly relocated to Ekpoma to coordinate peace-restoration efforts after violent demonstrations led to vandalism, looting, and damage to properties, including the palace of the Onojie of Ekpoma.

Security agencies have since arrested several suspects linked to the violence, though normalcy is yet to fully return to the affected communities.

Ekpoma, home to Ambrose Alli University and other educational institutions, remains a key academic hub in Edo Central. The government has not yet announced a new date for school resumption in the district.
