A video circulating on social media has ignited widespread debate after a woman called for the return of corporal punishment in schools, arguing that strict disciplinary measures previously helped instil discipline and respect among students.

The video, shared on the social media platform X, features Mary Amechi Aliogo, who expressed concern about what she described as declining discipline within the education system.

In the clip, Aliogo maintained that traditional disciplinary practices such as kneeling, frog jumps and other physical punishments once played a significant role in shaping students’ character. According to her, such measures encouraged respect for teachers and elders while promoting responsible behaviour both inside and outside the classroom.

She noted that in the past, many students were more cautious about their actions because they feared disciplinary consequences from teachers, especially when parents threatened to report misbehaviour at school.

Aliogo further argued that schools previously held greater authority in enforcing discipline, but claimed that the situation has changed in recent years, with some parents confronting teachers whenever their children are punished.

According to her, the absence of strict disciplinary measures may have contributed to behavioural challenges among students in today’s school environment.

Since the video surfaced online, it has generated mixed reactions among users on X and other social media platforms.

While some commentators supported her view, saying stricter discipline could help restore order and respect in schools, others strongly opposed the idea, warning against the use of corporal punishment and advocating alternative, non-violent disciplinary approaches.

The issue of corporal punishment has long remained a subject of debate among education stakeholders, with many advocates promoting modern behavioural management techniques, while others insist that stricter disciplinary measures are necessary to maintain order in classrooms.
