Junior Secondary School (JSS) Gurfata in Ibwa Ward, Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has suspended the admission of new JSS1 students following the collapse of its learning infrastructure and the absence of functional classrooms.
The community school, which serves residents of Gurfata and neighbouring settlements, was recently hit by a windstorm that further weakened its already fragile buildings, rendering several classrooms unsafe for teaching and learning.
As a result, school authorities have been unable to accommodate fresh intakes, leaving many school-age children in the community without access to junior secondary education.
A civic organisation monitoring public infrastructure projects disclosed that the situation has persisted for months without any meaningful intervention from relevant authorities. According to the group, the damage was first reported in November 2024, yet no repairs, reconstruction, or temporary learning facilities have been provided.
The organisation noted that JSS Gurfata has not admitted any JSS1 students since 2024 because there are no usable classrooms to host them.
It also questioned claims by the FCT Administration on ongoing renovations of public schools, stressing that JSS Gurfata has received no form of attention despite its deteriorating condition.
The group criticised the silence of elected representatives on the matter and called on the FCT Administration and other relevant stakeholders to urgently rehabilitate the school and provide temporary classrooms to prevent further disruption of learning.
The development has renewed concerns over the state of public school infrastructure in the FCT and its implications for equitable access to education for children in underserved communities.
