Ota, Nigeria – Covenant University has been ranked the best African university in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) Interdisciplinary Science Rankings, placing first in Nigeria, first in Africa, and 49th globally.
The rankings, published on THE’s website on Thursday, 19 November 2025, assess universities based on their contributions and commitment to interdisciplinary science—an approach that integrates knowledge and methods from multiple scientific disciplines or combines STEM fields with non-STEM areas such as social sciences, education, psychology, law, economics, and medical and health sciences.
The second edition of the Interdisciplinary Science Rankings evaluated institutions using 11 metrics, including funding, research quality, publications, facilities, administrative support, promotion, and reputation. Out of 911 universities from 94 countries, Covenant University stood out as the only African institution in the global top 50, followed by Cairo University, Egypt, at 69th.
In Nigeria, 18 of 30 universities that submitted data were ranked. Following Covenant University, the rankings placed:
