Governor Alex Otti is set to commission three newly rehabilitated student hostels and flag off five major infrastructure projects at Abia State University as part of activities marking the institution’s forthcoming convocation ceremony.
Government officials say the projects are designed to improve student welfare while expanding academic infrastructure within the university system.
The State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed the development while briefing journalists after the State Executive Council meeting presided over by the governor. He confirmed that the completed projects include the full rehabilitation of Hostels A, B, and C, facilities that had suffered years of infrastructural decay — a challenge common across many public universities in Nigeria.
Kanu further explained that Governor Otti will also flag off several new projects during the convocation week. These include the construction of a Faculty of Law, a modern cafeteria, a 5,000-capacity male hostel, a 5,000-capacity female hostel, and a Faculty of Agriculture.
According to officials, the projects form part of a broader government strategy to reposition higher education in Abia State and strengthen the competitiveness of its tertiary institutions nationwide.
The commissioner also highlighted recent academic milestones within the state’s institutions. He revealed that Abia State University recently matriculated 7,533 new students, while Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic admitted 5,100 students.
He noted that the figures reflect growing public confidence in the state’s higher education system despite persistent challenges such as infrastructure gaps and funding constraints affecting universities and polytechnics across the country.
Meanwhile, several prominent Nigerians are expected to attend the convocation ceremony, including Ooni of Ife, Allen Onyema, Stella Okoli, and Barth Nnaji.
Some of the dignitaries are slated to receive honorary degrees, while Nnaji is expected to deliver the convocation lecture. The ceremony is anticipated to draw national attention and reinforce the university’s academic and cultural significance.
Beyond developments within the university, Kanu revealed that the state government has approved funding for several infrastructure projects across Abia, including urban renewal initiatives in Umuahia and road construction in more than 51 locations statewide.
He added that the establishment of the Greater Ohafia Development Authority is intended to broaden development efforts beyond the state’s major urban centers of Aba and Umuahia.
