The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has reaffirmed that it is not part of the two-week warning strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), urging its members across Nigerian universities to continue their academic and administrative duties without disruption.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its National President, Comrade ‘Niyi Sunmonu, CONUA described as “misleading” the reports circulating on social media suggesting that it had joined ASUU’s industrial action.
“CONUA has not declared any strike action and is not part of any ongoing strike. This clarification is therefore issued to set the record straight,” Sunmonu stated.
The union reaffirmed its commitment to academic stability, excellence, and constructive engagement with the Federal Government and other stakeholders in the higher education sector. It also called on Vice-Chancellors to ensure the protection of its members who continue to perform their teaching, research, and administrative duties during the strike period.
According to CONUA, it currently has no reason to embark on any industrial action, noting that its relationship with the government remains cordial.
The statement recalled that when the Federal Government inaugurated the Renegotiation Committee of the 2009 Agreement in October 2024, CONUA was “deliberately omitted.” However, after the union lodged a formal protest and met with the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, on September 11, 2025, the government agreed to include all academic unions in the committee.
“We are pleased to note that the Ministry of Education has recently expanded the committee, fulfilling that promise. Until CONUA is formally brought to the table and any of the issues it has presented to the Federal Government become subjects of dispute, there is no foundation whatsoever for any strike action by CONUA,” the statement read.
The union urged students to remain focused on their studies and assured that it remains dedicated to promoting quality education, national development, and peaceful industrial relations within Nigeria’s university system.
