CLE Approves Increase in UNILORIN Law Admission Quota to 210

The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has approved an upward review of the admission quota for the Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin, raising it from 150 to 210 students.

The decision was reached at the Council’s first quarterly meeting of 2026, held on Wednesday, January 7, at its Abuja headquarters, under the chairmanship of Chief Emeka Ngige (SAN).

According to the CLE, the approval followed a thorough evaluation of the university’s infrastructure, staffing capacity, and compliance with regulatory standards for legal education in Nigeria.

Two private universities also benefitted from the review. Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, and Madonna University, Okija, had their admission quotas increased to 100 students each, following similar assessments.

UNILORIN Welcomes the Decision

Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Wahab Egbewole (SAN), described the approval as a significant boost for the institution.

Speaking through the Director of Corporate Affairs, Kunle Akogun, he assured that the Faculty of Law is fully prepared to accommodate the increased student intake.

“The Faculty has the required manpower and facilities to train the number of students allocated to it. This presents an opportunity for the university to contribute more meaningfully to the production of competent legal practitioners in the country,” he said.

Professor Egbewole commended the faculty’s management and staff for their commitment to maintaining high academic standards, noting that the faculty boasts one of the highest numbers of PhD holders among law faculties in Nigeria.

Faculty Leadership Reacts

The Dean, Faculty of Law, Dr. Bashir Omipidan, also hailed the development as a recognition of recent infrastructural and academic improvements.

He noted that the new quota places the University of Ilorin among institutions permitted to admit over 200 law students annually, adding that the faculty has witnessed notable upgrades in learning facilities over the past three years.

Dr. Omipidan expressed appreciation to academic and non-academic staff, alumni, and stakeholders for their contributions to the faculty’s growth.

Students Applaud the Move

Some students of the faculty also welcomed the quota increase, saying it will expand access to legal education and further enhance the university’s profile among prospective candidates.

They, however, urged the university management to sustain investments in infrastructure, staffing, and learning resources to ensure standards are not compromised.

The CLE’s latest decision is expected to strengthen capacity-building within Nigeria’s legal education system while positioning the University of Ilorin and other beneficiaries to produce more qualified legal practitioners for the nation.
