A final-year Microbiology student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, is currently fighting for his life following a severe accident that left him critically injured, prompting an urgent appeal for blood donation from students and members of the public.
The student, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed for privacy reasons, is receiving treatment at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC) after sustaining serious injuries to his head and leg during the incident. Sources within the student community disclosed that the accident occurred recently under circumstances that are still being investigated.
Medical personnel attending to the victim have reportedly identified the urgent need for B+ blood to help stabilize his condition and support ongoing treatment. A source familiar with the situation explained that the severity of the injuries has made immediate blood transfusion critical to the student’s chances of survival.
“The injuries are severe, particularly to the head and leg. Doctors are doing everything possible, but the availability of blood is now crucial,” the source said.
The development has sparked widespread concern across the OAU community, especially within the Microbiology department. Fellow students have launched an emergency mobilization campaign across social media platforms and WhatsApp groups, urging individuals with compatible blood types to come forward and donate.
One of the student volunteers involved in the campaign described the situation as a “race against time,” emphasizing that every minute matters in the effort to save the student’s life.
Observers say the incident once again highlights the persistent challenges surrounding emergency blood supply in Nigeria.
