**Bayero University Kano (BUK)** has restated its commitment to literacy as a cornerstone of empowerment, inclusive education, and equitable community development.

Vice Chancellor, **Professor Haruna Musa**, made the remarks during the university’s **2025 International Literacy Day celebration**, which also featured the induction of **Professor Fatima Muhammad Umar** into the institution’s Hall of Fame.

Professor Musa stressed that literacy goes beyond the ability to read and write, describing it as a catalyst for opportunities that allow individuals and communities to thrive. He commended the **Department of Continuing Education** for establishing adult literacy classes for junior staff and residents of neighbouring communities — a step he described as a milestone in BUK’s promotion of lifelong learning.

He pledged that the university would continue to champion literacy, second-chance education, and lifelong learning, particularly for women and marginalized groups, through collaborations with government, civil society, and community leaders.

Paying tribute to **Professor Fatima**, who retires in September 2025, the Vice Chancellor praised her decades-long contribution to literacy and adult education, noting that her influence would remain a reference point in academia and beyond.

Dean of the Faculty of Continuing Education, **Professor Gali Saidu**, lauded her achievements in shaping adult education, while **Associate Professor Auwal Halilu**, Head of the Department of Continuing Education, said the event echoed global calls for literacy as a pathway to a fair and sustainable society.

In her response, Professor Fatima described the honour as both “historic and memorable,” pledging to remain a dedicated ambassador of literacy and continuing education. She also hailed the establishment of the **BUK Hall of Fame**, calling it a model initiative for universities nationwide.

The ceremony featured cultural performances, goodwill messages, and the official unveiling of Professor Fatima Muhammad Umar as the latest inductee into BUK’s Hall of Fame.
