BUK Inducts 55 New Doctors of Optometry as VC Urges Graduates to Spearhead Quality Eye Care

On Monday, 1 December 2025, Bayero University, Kano (BUK) held its 4th induction ceremony, formally welcoming 55 new graduates of its Doctor of Optometry programme. The ceremony, organised by the Department of Optometry in the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, underscores BUK’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s eye-health workforce. During the event, the Registrar of Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria (ODORBN), Dr. Obinna Edwin Awiaka, administered the oath of allegiance. He urged the inductees to champion professionalism, integrity, and compassion in their practice — noting that as eye health challenges surge globally and in Nigeria, optometrists have a critical role to play. He sounded a cautionary note about rising myopia worldwide, driven in part by increased screen exposure, and called for more specialised eye-care centres and hospitals to meet growing demand.
