Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti (BOUESTI), has introduced stricter safety measures, including the suspension of all social gatherings, following a tragic stampede that claimed the lives of three individuals during a post-convocation celebration.

The directive, issued through the institution’s Students’ Union Government (SUG), comes in response to growing safety concerns after the incident, which occurred shortly after the university’s convocation ceremony.

According to reports, the fatal stampede broke out at a post-convocation party held at a hotel in Ikere-Ekiti, where a large crowd of graduates and students had gathered to celebrate. The situation reportedly escalated into panic, leading to chaos and multiple casualties.

Preliminary accounts indicate that the incident followed a disturbance at the venue, which triggered a sudden rush as attendees attempted to flee, resulting in the stampede that left three people dead and several others injured.

In reaction, the SUG announced an immediate suspension of after-parties and late-night social events within and around the campus, stressing that the decision was necessary to prevent a recurrence of such tragedies.

The union described the move as a proactive safety measure aimed at protecting students, warning that any violation of the directive would attract sanctions. It also urged students to strictly adhere to the new guidelines and avoid overcrowded events.

The development has sparked renewed discussions within the university community about event planning, crowd control, and emergency preparedness during large academic celebrations.

University authorities are also expected to review existing safety protocols in collaboration with security agencies to ensure safer conduct of future events.

Meanwhile, condolences continue to pour in for the victims, as stakeholders call for stricter enforcement of safety standards during student gatherings across Nigerian tertiary institutions.
