A deadly pre-dawn attack on Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State, has left the community in shock after bandits stormed the school, killed the Vice Principal, and abducted at least 25 students.
The attack, which occurred around 5:00 a.m. on Monday, is the latest in a series of violent raids on the Maga community in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area.
Although initial attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, were unsuccessful, he later confirmed the incident. According to him, the assailants invaded the school by scaling its perimeter fence before opening fire.
“Armed with sophisticated weapons, they shot sporadically before whisking away 25 students,” Abubakar said, adding that police tactical units deployed to the scene engaged the attackers, but the bandits had already taken the students from their hostel before reinforcement arrived.
In an official response, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ahmed Idris, announced that Deputy Governor Senator Umar Tafida had been dispatched to the school to assess the situation on behalf of Governor Nasir Idris, who is currently out of the state.
“The deputy governor is on his way to know the exact situation. The governor is not in the state for now, but his deputy will go on his behalf until he returns,” Idris stated.
Residents say Maga has endured several attacks in recent times. A community member, Aliyu Yakubu, recounted the horror of the early-morning raid, noting that the bandits met no resistance as they stormed the school.
He confirmed that the school principal, simply identified as Makuku, was shot while trying to shield the girls from the attackers.
“He was shot as he tried to protect his students from being taken by the bandits. It’s a great loss for the community and the school,” Yakubu said.
Security forces are currently intensifying efforts to track the abductors and rescue the students.
