Babcock University has introduced a revised dress code policy, banning dreadlocks, bubu, dansiki, and other outfits considered inappropriate, as part of renewed efforts to enforce discipline and uphold moral standards on campus.

The new directive was announced in a statement signed by the Vice President for Student Development, Olanivi Arije. The university declared that all previously issued “hair-pass” approvals — documents allegedly permitting students to keep certain hairstyles — have been cancelled and will no longer be recognised across any of its campuses.

According to the statement, such passes are “illegal documents” that do not confer any legitimate right to maintain hairstyles not approved by the institution.
“The use, circulation, or recognition of hair-pass in any form is henceforth outlawed at Babcock University with immediate effect,” the management stated.

The regulations are expected to take effect at the beginning of the second semester in January and will be strictly enforced. Students in possession of any form of hair exemption permit were directed to desist from using them immediately or face disciplinary action.

Under the new rules, male students are prohibited from keeping voluminous or unkempt hair, beards, or dreadlocks, while female students are barred from wearing extreme, indecent, or inconsistent hairstyles.

The dress code also forbids body-hugging outfits, sleeveless dresses, sagging trousers, and excessively baggy or overly long trousers. Students are also restricted from tying scarves with corporate or academic wear at certain times.

In addition, outfits such as bubu, dansiki, joggers, sportswear, and walk-out wear are prohibited within specific periods on campus. The university warned that violators will face disciplinary measures, stressing that ignorance or appeals will not be entertained.

“All students are expected to resume fully compliant with these regulations,” the statement added.

Babcock University now joins a growing list of Nigerian universities enforcing stricter dress codes in efforts to curb indecent dressing, including the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Abia State University (ABSU), Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB), and Covenant University.
