The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka chapter, has commenced an indefinite strike over the non-payment of the full August 2026 salary to its members.
The union announced the industrial action on Monday, September 7, 2026, following a congress meeting where members resolved to withdraw their academic and administrative services until the outstanding salary is fully paid.
In a statement jointly signed by the branch Chairperson, Innocent Nnubia, and Secretary, Osita Nnajiofor, the union said the decision was taken in accordance with the standing resolution of ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) on the non-payment of salaries.
According to the union, the NEC resolution empowers ASUU branches to withdraw their services when salaries remain unpaid after the third day of the following month.
The union noted that as of September 7, the university had failed to pay its members their full August salaries, describing the situation as a recurring and frustrating experience.
“This makes it more than three times that our members are having this ugly and frustrating experience,” the statement said.
ASUU-UNIZIK called on the university authorities and the Visitor to the institution, President Bola Tinubu, to urgently intervene and ensure the immediate payment of the outstanding August salaries.
The union also urged the authorities to put measures in place to prevent a recurrence of the situation.
The statement directed all members to immediately withdraw their academic and administrative services, adding that the action would remain in force until the full August salary was paid to all affected members.
“The withdrawal of services shall subsist until the complete payment of August 2026 salary to all members,” the union stated.
Meanwhile, efforts to obtain the university management’s position on the development were unsuccessful.
When contacted, the Director of Information and Public Relations of UNIZIK, Aloysius Attah, simply responded, “No comment.”
