Stakeholders at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, are celebrating the institution’s impressive performance in the newly released 2025 SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR), where the university emerged Nigeria’s most innovative, ranked 3rd in research development, and placed 6th overall among universities in the country.

SCImago Institutions Rankings is globally recognised for its rigorous methodology in assessing universities and research institutions using credible indicators that measure research performance, innovation outputs and societal impact.

Reacting to the development, academic scholar and university stakeholder, Dr. Abubakar Abdullah Usman, said the rankings have dispelled long-standing misconceptions that technology-based universities lack depth compared to conventional institutions.

“ATBU’s 2025 SCImago performance decisively puts those doubts to rest. Being ranked 1st in Innovation and 3rd in Research underscores the university’s strong capacity to generate impactful knowledge, translate ideas into practical solutions and contribute meaningfully to societal and industrial advancement,” he stated.

He noted that technology universities are not only keeping pace with academic development but are leading the future through innovation. According to him, innovation thrives where there is deliberate investment in problem-solving ecosystems, experimentation and applied research.

“ATBU’s top position in innovation reflects a vibrant culture of technological creativity, interdisciplinary collaboration and real-world relevance. Combined with its impressive research standing and 6th overall ranking, the university has reaffirmed itself as a powerhouse of progress,” he added.

The latest ranking comes at a time the institution has been at the centre of debate over a proposed National Assembly bill seeking to convert ATBU from a technology-based institution to a conventional university. Dr. Usman argued that the ranking clearly demonstrates the value and necessity of maintaining technology-focused universities.

He stressed that the SCImago ranking indicators reaffirm that technology-driven education fuels development, strengthens national capacity, and equips graduates with globally competitive, future-ready skills.

“With this ranking, critics have been silenced. Technology universities are not optional to national growth; they are essential drivers of change,” he concluded.

The recognition is expected to further boost ATBU’s visibility, attract collaboration opportunities and reinforce its role as a leading hub for innovation and research excellence in Nigeria.
