ASUU Issues FG 14-Day Ultimatum, Threatens Nationwide Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Federal Government 14 days to address outstanding demands or risk a fresh round of nationwide industrial action.

The decision followed the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, held on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at the University of Abuja.

In a statement signed by ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, the union accused the government of “persistent neglect” of public universities and disregard for the welfare of academic staff.

Prof. Piwuna recalled that in August, ASUU held protest rallies across federal and state universities to highlight the crisis in the sector but lamented that the government had yet to respond in any meaningful way.

“If within 14 days nothing is done, we shall commence with a two-week warning strike, after which we may proceed to a total and indefinite shutdown of universities nationwide,” the statement warned.

ASUU’s key demands include:

Renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement
Sustainable funding for universities and revitalisation of public institutions
An end to alleged victimisation of members at Lagos State University (LASU), Prince Abubakar Audu University, and the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO)
Payment of outstanding 25–35% salary arrears
Settlement of delayed promotion arrears spanning over four years
Release of withheld third-party deductions

Piwuna stressed that these issues have been on the table for years and warned that government inaction was pushing the university system toward another cycle of disruption.

The looming strike threat comes at a time when stakeholders are urging reforms to stabilise Nigeria’s higher education system, which has suffered repeated shutdowns in recent years.
