The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Abuja Zone, has urged Nigerians to prevail on the Federal Government to address all unresolved issues with the union in order to avert another avoidable industrial action.
The call was made on Monday in Abuja by the Zonal Coordinator, Prof. Al-Amin Abdullahi, during a press conference. He was represented by the ASUU Chairman, University of Abuja chapter, Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh.
Abdullahi cautioned that the future of public universities and their students must not be jeopardised by what he described as insecurity, indifference, and political posturing. He noted that the briefing was necessary to update Nigerians on ASUU’s engagement with the government following the recent suspension of its warning strike.
He reiterated that the union remains committed to the renegotiation and full implementation of the 2009 ASUU–FG Agreement, which covers academic autonomy, improved funding, staff welfare, and revitalisation of Nigeria’s public universities.
He further lamented the non-release of members’ withheld salaries covering three and a half months, as well as outstanding arrears such as the one-year 25%/35% wage award, unpaid third-party deductions, cooperative funds, and union check-off dues.
Abdullahi explained that although the government’s latest proposals were presented at an emergency NEC meeting on October 21, their inadequacy was evident. Nonetheless, ASUU accepted the offers in good faith to allow meaningful collective bargaining to resume.
He added that, out of respect for students, parents, labour unions, the media, and other Nigerians who supported the struggle, ASUU suspended its two-week action on October 22. The union then gave the Federal Government one month to conclude negotiations and demonstrate genuine commitment to implementing the agreed proposals.
As the expiration of that timeline approaches, ASUU warns that Nigeria’s public university system hangs in the balance—unless swift government action is taken.
