Aribisala: Iyin Ekiti University Positioned to Become Global Leader in 10 Years

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has increased the admission quota of the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin Ekiti, to 3,300, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Gben..

Aribisala attributed the increase to the significant progress recorded by the newly established university since it commenced academic activities in January 2026.

The Vice-Chancellor disclosed this on Monday at the institution’s maiden press conference in Iyin Ekiti, where he outlined the university’s achievements, ongoing projects and future plans.

According to him, the university began academic activities with 1,564 students across 35 departments and four faculties.

The faculties are Natural and Applied Sciences; Engineering and Technology; Computing and Information Technology; and Environmental Sciences.

Aribisala said the institution was also preparing to introduce additional programmes, including Anatomy, Physiology, Nursing and Medicine, as well as Artificial Intelligence, Telecommunication Science, and Tourism and Hospitality Management.

“Plans are underway to begin Anatomy, Physiology, Nursing and Medicine in no too distant time. There is also plan to add Artificial Intelligence, Telecommunication Science, and Tourism and Hospitality Management. The development of the permanent site is ongoing,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor added that the institution’s rapid development had contributed to the decision by JAMB to increase its admission quota to 3,300.

He assured prospective students that the university had put measures in place to ensure that admissions were based strictly on merit.

Aribisala said the institution was focused on building a 21st-century university with strong emphasis on academic excellence, research, innovation, student accommodation and a conducive learning environment.

He said the university’s goal was to produce graduates capable of developing practical solutions to Nigeria’s socio-economic and technological challenges.

The Vice-Chancellor also commended President Bola Tinubu for establishing the university in 2025 and for introducing the student loan scheme administered by the Nigerian Education Loan Fund.

He described NELFUND as “one of the greatest things to happen to university education in Nigeria,” noting that many students of the institution were already benefiting from the scheme.

“A good number of our students are already benefiting from the NELFUND. The President is highly commended for this great initiative,” Aribisala said.

He appealed to individuals, corporate organisations and other stakeholders to support the university’s development, particularly in providing infrastructure and facilities for teaching, learning and research.

Aribisala also acknowledged the contributions of the Senate President, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, and the Oluyin of Iyin Ekiti, Oba Adeola Ajakaye, towards the development of the institution.

According to him, the university’s take-off grant had supported the provision of laboratory equipment, office and classroom furniture, solar power infrastructure and the construction of a 250-capacity Information and Communication Technology building.

He added that hostels had been completed at the take-off site, while additional hostel facilities were under construction at the permanent site.

The university is also benefiting from TETFund interventions covering hostel accommodation, office furniture, a lecture theatre, laboratories and workshop equipment.

Aribisala said the institution was committed to developing a strong residential model, which he believes would promote academic excellence, discipline and social development among students.

“It was part of my vision to make it residential. I am not joking with the residential vision, not only for now but for the future of the university to inculcate culture into the students. I envisioned a university that is residential and ICT compliant,” he said.

He added that the institution was being positioned to produce graduates who would create jobs, attract globally recognised researchers and undertake cutting-edge research.

Aribisala said the university also aimed to contribute to the socio-economic development of its host community and become one of the leading universities globally within its first 10 years.

On academic stability, the Vice-Chancellor said the university had prioritised a predictable academic calendar to ensure students complete their programmes within the stipulated period.

“I am happy to inform you that the university completed the first academic session (2025/2026) this month (August), while the 2026/2027 academic session will begin on October 12, 2026,” he said.

He further said the university remained committed to staff welfare and was up to date with the new salary structure agreed between the Federal Government and relevant university unions.

Research, according to Aribisala, also remains a major priority of the institution, particularly in areas related to emerging technologies and environmental science.

He disclosed that a research team led by Dr Solomon Popoola had secured a National Research Fund grant, while Senator Opeyemi Bamidele had pledged N1 billion for research over the next five years.

The Vice-Chancellor added that the university had established multidisciplinary research groups to attract competitive research grants and was collaborating with Morgan State University in the United States.
