Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has approved the suspension of three top government officials, following recommendations by the State House of Assembly.

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has approved the suspension of three top government officials, following recommendations by the State House of Assembly.

In a statement on Wednesday, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Kula Tersoo, said the move was a demonstration of Alia’s respect for the rule of law and due process.

The affected officials are: Grace Adagba, Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB); Maxwell Ogiri, Chairman of Otukpo Local Government; and Michael Uper, Executive Secretary of the Benue State Lottery Commission. Each faces a one-month suspension effective immediately.

Governor Alia praised the Assembly for exercising its constitutional role, assuring residents that his administration remains committed to transparency, accountability, and good governance. He further directed that all affected institutions ensure uninterrupted service delivery during the suspension period.

The development comes against the backdrop of tensions between the executive and legislature. The Assembly had earlier recommended six-month suspensions for the officials, but the governor only approved one month. In response, the lawmakers announced they would no longer entertain correspondence from the executive or proceed with screening of commissioner nominees.

Despite the friction, Governor Alia urged citizens to continue supporting his administration’s efforts to build “a state that works for all.”
