Ajegunle Residents Protest Alleged Sale of Government Primary School Land

Lagos, Nigeria — Tension is rising in Ajegunle, Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area of Lagos State, as residents raise alarm over the alleged grabbing and sale of part of a government-owned primary school by a member of the Ajegunle royal family.

At the centre of the dispute is Kajola Nursery and Primary School, located at 159 Kirikiri Road, opposite Second Benue Bus Stop. The school has for decades served pupils from the Godo area, Kirikiri axis and Dankaka communities, offering basic education to children between the ages of three and 13.

Community sources alleged that Hon. Wale Oluwa, Secretary to the Olu of Iwa and Apapa Kingdom, masterminded the disposal of a section of the school land to a private buyer popularly known as “North America.” According to residents, the alleged transaction has further weakened the school’s already fragile infrastructure and triggered a decline in enrolment, as parents relocate their children to unregulated and often substandard private schools.

Residents described Kajola Primary School as more than just a learning centre, stressing that it plays a key role in reducing crime, discouraging social vices and providing opportunities for vulnerable children within the densely populated Ajegunle community.

Some stakeholders argued that the alleged sale of public education property violates provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which guarantees access to basic education, as well as international standards promoted by UNESCO on children’s right to education.

There were also claims that the transaction was being supported or supervised by Hon. Sabur Akanbi Oluwa (SAO), a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Ajeromi-Ifelodun Constituency II.

Residents further alleged that the political influence of the Oluwa family has created an atmosphere of fear among teachers and education officials, discouraging them from speaking out. The situation, they said, is unfolding under the watch of the Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, who is also a resident of the area.

Calling for urgent action, community members appealed to the Lagos State Government to investigate the allegations, halt any form of encroachment on the school land and protect public education assets from private takeover.

However, when contacted, Hon. Wale Oluwa denied selling any government school property. He maintained that the land in question does not belong to Kajola Primary School but is a family-owned property sharing a boundary with the school.

“The place in question was not a school but only shared a boundary with the school,” Oluwa said. “It was family property left unattended and had become a security threat. Education authorities even wrote to the family to address the issue. Our family has donated land for schools, hospitals, cemeteries and markets, but the portion allegedly sold was not part of the school and was not being used for educational purposes.”

Despite the denial, residents insist that government authorities must intervene swiftly to prevent the erosion of public education infrastructure in Ajegunle.
