Achievers University Expels Over 15 Students for Social Media, Security-Related Offences

The management of Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State, has expelled no fewer than 15 female students over their involvement in what it described as “sex video–related misconduct,” as the institution..

The disclosure was made by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Professor Bode Ayorinde, during the university’s matriculation ceremony held on Friday.

Addressing newly admitted students, Ayorinde warned against the misuse of social media, stressing that online conduct linked to the institution’s image would attract serious sanctions.

“We have dismissed more than 15 female students over sex video offences. Students must understand that social media is not a playground for misconduct. If you present yourself inappropriately and associate Achievers University with it, you will be dismissed. Use social media for positive purposes,” he said.

The Pro-Chancellor also cited a separate case involving a student who was expelled for making security-threatening statements online. According to him, the student, who was close to graduation, posted that he would “deal with Boko Haram” should the group come to the university, an action management interpreted as inviting security risks to the campus.

“We refunded his N2.3 million and dismissed him because security is not something to joke with,” Ayorinde added.

He noted that the university operates a strict disciplinary framework and urged students to report suspicious behaviour. He also called on parents and guardians to play a stronger role in guiding their children and wards towards responsible conduct.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Amos Aremu, reiterated the institution’s commitment to quality assurance, discipline and academic integrity, assuring students that management remains focused on providing a safe and conducive learning environment.

According to the university, offences such as fighting, alcohol abuse, bullying, sexual harassment and drug-related activities attract severe sanctions, including expulsion.

Ayorinde further disclosed that in 2025, the university dismissed 17 students for fraudulent attempts to obtain examination clearance without paying school fees, while three others were expelled for dealing in hard drugs.

The matriculation ceremony, which formally inducted 936 new students into the university community, featured the administration of the matriculation oath and a charge for students to uphold the institution’s values of discipline, responsibility and academic excellence.
