Academic Transparency: Niger Republic Hands Over List of Approved Institutions to Joint Commission

Authorities in the Niger Republic have forwarded an official list of accredited higher institutions to the Nigeria–Niger Joint Commission in a step aimed at strengthening academic cooperation and ensuring greater clarity in the recognition of academic certificates.

The directive was issued by Niger’s Minister of Education and Scientific Research, Mamadou Saidou, who approved the transmission of the validated list through the country’s national quality assurance body.

According to officials, the list was compiled by the National Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education and Research and represents the official register of recognised private universities and other higher institutions operating in the country. Authorities stressed that any alternative listings circulating outside the document should not be regarded as valid.

During a formal engagement, the minister presented the document to the Secretary-General of the Nigeria–Niger Joint Commission, Musa S. Mamman, who is expected to transmit it to the appropriate Nigerian authorities.

Officials explained that the initiative is designed to provide a clear reference point for verifying academic qualifications obtained in the Niger Republic, particularly for purposes such as employment, admission into further studies and participation in national service programmes.

In a subsequent communication to Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the commission requested that the document be shared with key regulatory bodies, including the National Universities Commission (NUC), the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the Council of Legal Education and the Medical Council of Nigeria.

The move is also in line with regional education frameworks such as the Addis Ababa Declaration of 2008, which recognises Niger’s quality assurance agency as the sole authority responsible for accrediting and validating higher education institutions within the country.

Education stakeholders believe the development could help address long-standing concerns surrounding the verification of foreign academic qualifications, especially within West Africa where cross-border study is increasingly common.

Established in 1971, the Nigeria–Niger Joint Commission serves as a bilateral platform for cooperation between both countries in areas including education, trade and security. Within the education sector, the commission plays a key role in promoting institutional collaboration and ensuring mutual recognition of academic qualifications.

Officials noted that the newly submitted list will serve as a reference guide for Nigerian agencies and other stakeholders when assessing institutions in the Niger Republic, with the goal of improving transparency and safeguarding academic standards.
