The management of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has approved the appointment of new directors for two of its key academic and research institutions—the Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT) and the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH).

According to separate appointment letters issued by the university, Vice-Chancellor Professor Adamu Ahmed confirmed the appointment of Professor Abdullahi Mati as Director of CERT and Professor Audu Joseph Natala as Director of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Both appointments are for an initial two-year tenure, subject to satisfactory performance.

Professor Mati, a seasoned scholar with extensive experience in energy research and institutional management, previously served as a reactor manager at CERT and was the pioneer director of the Centre for Renewable Energy Research at Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University, Katsina. He is expected to provide strategic leadership for CERT, tackling key institutional challenges such as funding gaps, staff development, capacity building, research relevance, and infrastructure deficits. The university noted that his leadership is critical to repositioning the centre in line with ABU’s research vision and Nigeria’s broader energy development agenda.

Similarly, Professor Natala, a renowned expert in veterinary parasitology and entomology, will lead the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at what the university describes as a crucial period in its development. He is tasked with strengthening clinical teaching and diagnostic services, improving integration between the hospital and academic departments, ensuring better utilisation and maintenance of equipment, enhancing internal resource mobilisation, and boosting community engagement. He is also expected to drive improved staff motivation, performance, and accountability within the hospital.

The Vice-Chancellor congratulated both appointees and expressed confidence in their ability to advance ABU’s academic excellence, research innovation and institutional development.
