Abia Govt Receives Over 28,000 Applications for 4,000 Teaching Jobs, Moves to Strengthen Safe Schools Initiative

The Abia State Government has received an overwhelming 28,213 applications for 4,000 teaching positions in the ongoing second phase of its education sector recruitment exercise. The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the progress of the programme.

He said the recruitment window, which opened on November 6 and closed on November 29, 2025, has now entered the verification stage.

“The window for verification of submissions closes this week. The applicants will thereafter be scheduled to sit for computer-based tests, and those who pass will proceed to the interview stage,” Kanu stated.

The commissioner explained that the state hopes to recruit another 4,000 qualified teachers from this round to complement the 5,394 teachers previously employed, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the education workforce in Abia.

In addition to the recruitment drive, the state government has concluded arrangements to inaugurate the Abia State Safe Schools Steering Committee. The committee is expected to serve as a multi-sectoral platform to coordinate the implementation of the Safe Schools Declaration and enhance security across educational institutions in the state.

While Nigeria continues to grapple with teacher shortages and challenges in recruitment and retention across many states, Abia’s adoption of digital processes and centralized recruitment platforms is seen as a progressive step. However, education analysts say more sustained efforts are needed nationally to address systemic issues affecting the sector.

They stressed that Nigeria must prioritise investment in teacher training, recruitment, welfare and retention, while exploring innovative models already embraced by other developing countries to strengthen its education system.

With the ongoing recruitment and renewed focus on school safety, stakeholders remain hopeful that Abia State’s initiatives will contribute to improving teaching quality and educational outcomes across the state.
