AAUA Lecturers Suspend Four-Month Strike After Reaching Understanding With Management

Lecturers at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) in Ondo State have suspended their four-month-old strike, paving the way for the resumption of full academic activities on campus.

Confirming the development, Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), AAUA chapter, Comrade Bolawaji Oshodi, said the decision followed a renewed understanding reached with the university management.

“For now, we have suspended the strike. Everything is based on the agreement we had with the university management. Management has been very supportive, and we understand,” Oshodi stated.

He noted that despite being owed one month’s salary, the lecturers resolved to return to the classrooms “out of love for the system and our students.”

AAUA lecturers had embarked on an indefinite strike earlier in the year over the non-payment of salaries and arrears by the Ondo State Government. The action was formally communicated in a letter signed by Oshodi and the union’s secretary, Olusegun Taiwo, directing members to withdraw their services until all outstanding financial obligations were settled.

The letter, issued after an August 21, 2025 Congress meeting, cited unpaid salaries, promotion arrears, earned workload allowances, and other entitlements running into billions of naira as reasons for the industrial action.

Oshodi lamented that the union had written multiple letters to both the university management and the state government without receiving any meaningful response.

“To be sincere, the major problem we are facing is funding. The state government is not funding the university. As I speak, we are being owed two months’ salaries (July and August), aside from several arrears,” he said.

He maintained that the union resorted to a total strike when it became clear that the government was not forthcoming with solutions.
